Best Ways to Enjoy Spring Boating in Michigan

Posted by Alumi-Span Docks on 2/1/2021
Are you ready to exchange the snow shovel and snow blower for a life vest and a boat?

Tired of the cold weather and ready to enjoy the sun when it finally comes out again?

Michiganders all over the state are looking forward to spring and summer not only for yearly boating excursions, but just for an excuse to get out of the house again. In 2020, we spent a lot of time at home, and the start of 2021 has been more of the same.

If you’re a seasoned boater or just someone looking for a new way to spend time outside with family, boating in Michigan is a great option.

Michigan ranks No. 3 in the country for registered boats, according to the Oakland Press. Our state has miles and miles of freshwater shoreline to explore, and you can check out some amazing places in Michigan that you might not have seen before!

  1. Grosse Pointe: At the western end of Lake St. Clair and the head of the Detroit River, this is a top boater destination. You can get a close-up view of freighters and tankers from all around the world or stop by a smaller marina to enjoy smaller towns dotted along the shoreline.
  2. Torch Lake: This is one of the most famous inland lakes in Michigan. It was even voted 3rd most beautiful lake in the world by National Geographic! The water is crystal clear and because it’s the second-biggest inland lake in the state, you can find a quiet cove to relax in away from the crowds.
  3. Spring Lake: In Grand Haven, check out the annual Grand Have Coast Guard Festival (pandemic permitting in 2021)! There are miles of shoreline, dunes, a boardwalk, and clear waters to explore in this tourist town.

Make Sure You’re Up to Date on Boater Safety!

In Michigan, “boaters born after June 30, 1996 and most personal watercraft operators who operate a vessel in Michigan must have a boater education card (boating safety certificate).”
