Tips for Keeping Your Dock Strong and Safe
How much maintenance is required to keep an aluminum dock clean and undamaged?

Looking for a dock that delivers year after year—through scorching summers, icy winters, and everything in between?

Aluminum docks are a smart choice for families across the U.S. because they’re durable, versatile, and require very little upkeep. That being said, even the toughest docks need a little TLC to stay in top shape! Here are some tips and tricks for keeping your dock fully functional and beautiful for years to come.

A Little Maintenance Goes a Long Way

Aluminum docks are famously low maintenance, but they’re not completely maintenance-free. With unpredictable weather—including heavy snowfall, spring flooding, and summer storms—it’s important to inspect your dock each season. It doesn’t take long, and it helps protect your investment and your family’s safety.

Whether you leave your dock in the water year-round or reinstall it each spring, take time before your first boat ride or fishing trip to check for wear and tear.

Check the Water Level and Adjust Your Dock Height

Water levels continue to fluctuate on the Great Lakes and inland lakes alike. Changes in rainfall, shoreline development, and even wildlife activity can cause noticeable differences from year to year. Make sure your dock is sitting at a safe height above the water. Ideally, waves shouldn’t be able to wash over the surface. Aluminum dock systems make adjusting leg heights quick and easy—no heavy lifting required.

Inspect for Winter Damage

Ice can twist up and put stress on your dock’s structure. In the spring, look closely at all welds and seams for cracks. If you find any damage, you can easily order replacement sections. Also, check if your dock is level—you can use a carpenter’s level or measure from the deck down to the water at several points.

If your dock is augered into the lakebed, give each leg a firm shake to make sure it’s secure. You may need to adjust or retighten brackets. Walk the entire structure and look over all connections. Make sure bolts are in place, caps are intact, and everything feels sturdy. If anything’s missing or worn out, replacement parts are available on our website—and for the best fit and quality, we always recommend Alumi-Span parts.

Don’t Forget to Clean

Aluminum won’t rust, but it can corrode over time. Plus, lake gunk, algae, and debris can build up. An annual cleaning keeps your dock looking good and promotes safe footing. A gentle power wash or scrub with environmentally-safe cleaner is usually all you need.

Make Your Dock Work for Your 2025 Activities

Got a new kayak or paddleboard this year? Think about upgrades that make your dock more user-friendly. Add a ladder for easier access, install stringer bumpers to protect your watercraft, or add a kayak rack for convenient storage.

Make sure the area around and beneath your dock is clear of snags that could be dangerous for paddlers. As your family’s water adventures evolve, your dock should adapt with you.

A Smart Start to a Long Season

Just a few hours of spring maintenance can help you enjoy worry-free fun all summer and fall. With routine care, your Alumi-Span dock will keep performing season after season—long after your current boat has been retired.
